Advocacy

The purpose of APODC is to "champion a better quality of life for Deaf and hearing impaired children".

So, we get involved whenever there is an opportunity to do this, for example:

  • Sharing the experiences of parents and children at training courses for those working with Deaf or hearing impaired children
  • Meeting regularly with Deaf education providers to feedback parents concerns
  • Working with Deaf education providers to improve service to children and their families
  • Providing support for member’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings
  • Being a parent representative on Advisory Groups (e.g. with the Ministry of Education)
  • Working for improved access to services and equipment through the Ministry of Health
  • Working for improved NZSL access for students

Concerns affecting Deaf or hearing impaired children throughout NZ are sent to our parent group (NZ Federation for Deaf Children) to follow up.
